Getting tested for HIV and STIs

Regular sexual health check-ups are important to help ensure you can continue to have and enjoy a healthy sex life. If you are not in a relationship or sexually active at present, it is still important to look after your sexual health.

Swift access to HIV and STI testing and treatment will help people to establish their infection status, to access treatments, to cure or manage infections and to restrict further transmission.

Many primary care centres provide sexual health screening services. In addition there is an extensive network of STI clinics across the country. STI screening is free at these clinics. You will need to make an appointment for most clinics, unless they provide a drop in service.

Some NGO centres also provide rapid testing such as the Sexual Health Centre in Cork and the Red Ribbon Project in Limerick.

Home testing - Home testing kits are becoming more available. Many people would prefer to test at home. It is important if you do decide to test at home that you get your test from a reputable source. The Irish Family Planning Clinic have teamed up with Lloyds online doctors to develop an easy to use home STI testing kit. The kits test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HIV and are clinically robust.

Lets get checked also provides comprehensive home testing kits which test for a range of STI's. For more information on the service visit www.letsgetchecked.com
